129 locations make MERKUR the most popular and most successful consumer markets in Austria. The company was founded in 1969 and is part of the REWE International AG and with its approximately 10,000 employees also one of the largest employers in the country.

About 2,000 m² of selling floors and more than 25,000 items per market provide a unique shopping experience for over 1.3 million customers per week. MERKUR sees itself as a market place which offers its customers a wide range of fresh, high-quality products under one roof.

At the same time, MERKUR takes on responsibility for society and environment. Together with its customers, MERKUR supports charitable organizations such as the CliniClowns or the Caritas Learning Cafés.

MERKUR pays special attention to sustainable enjoyment and transparency which characterize the product range. By using green energy and energy-saving technologies, MERKUR sets an example for the protection of our climate as well.

Products and services

MERKUR offers a product range of more than 25,000 items.

  • Its flagship is the fresh produce section offering 600 fresh fruit and vegetable varieties, about 450 ham, sausage and cheese specialties in the delicatessen section, around 420 meat products and approximately 80 fresh water and sea fish as well as sea food.
  • Up to 100 kinds of bread and baked goods are baked daily in our own store bakeries in all 129 markets. Cakes and pastries are produced locally, too.

Chronicle

1969

The first MERKUR market opens in the 17th district of Vienna.

1988

As a trendsetter in Austrian food retailing, MERKUR introduces the first scanning cash registers.

1994

As one of the first grocery chains worldwide, MERKUR includes an organic brand, Ja! Natürlich, in its product range.

1996

MERKUR becomes part of the current REWE International AG.

MERKUR introduces the personalized customer loyalty program Friends of MERKUR which currently has 2.5 million regular clients.

2006

MERKUR focuses on regional products from local agriculture.

2008

MERKUR uses only green power from 100 % renewable energy sources for its markets.

2012

MERKUR Hoher Markt opens as an exclusive flagship store in the first district of Vienna.

2015

After 27 successful years MERKUR’s Mr. Ano Nym retires and a new advertising campaign is presented. With the slogan MERKUR – That’s how you make friends the advertising character FRÄNZ is the successor.
